چکیده

We analyze the dynamics of neural oscillators in the presence of both synaptic and diffusive coupling. First we derive a computationally effective, yet plausible model of extra-synaptic neurotransmitter diffusion. Second, we modify the Hindmarsh-Rose oscillator to account for the diffusion. For ensembles of these modified model neurons we obtain conditions ensuring global synchronization. Our results demonstrate that diffusion substantially affects the dynamics of a network of model neurons.

Simple estimation of synchronization threshold in ensembles of diffusively coupled chaotic systems.

In this paper, we define a simple criterion of the synchronization threshold in the set of coupled chaotic systems (flows or maps) with diagonal diffusive coupling. The condition of chaotic synchronization is determined only by two "parameters of order," i.e., the largest Lyapunov exponent and the coupling coefficient. Our approach can be applied for both regular chaotic networks and arrays or ...

Partial Network Synchronization Using Diï¿1⁄2ffusive Dynamic Couplings

Partial network synchronization is studied for a class of nonlinear oscillators interconnected through diffusive dynamic couplings. We construct diffusive dynamic couplings combining nonlinear observers and output feedback controllers. Sufficient conditions on the systems to be interconnected, on the network topology, on the observer dynamics, and on the coupling strength that guarantee (global...

Semi-passivity and synchronization of diffusively coupled neuronal oscillators

We discuss synchronization in networks of neuronal oscillators which are interconnected via diffusive coupling, i.e. linearly coupled via gap junctions. In particular, we present sufficient conditions for synchronization in these networks using the theory of semi-passive and passive systems. We show that the conductance-based neuronal models of Hodgkin-Huxley, Morris-Lecar, and the popular redu...

Asymmetry in pulse-coupled oscillators with delay.

We studied the dynamics of synchronization in asymmetrically coupled neural oscillators with time delay. Stability analysis revealed that symmetric excitatory coupling results in synchrony at multiple phase relations. Asymmetry yields two saddle-node bifurcations of the stable states when coupling is asymmetric. By contrast, with inhibitory coupling only in phase or antiphase is stable as long ...

Network synchronization, diffusion, and the paradox of heterogeneity.

Many complex networks display strong heterogeneity in the degree (connectivity) distribution. Heterogeneity in the degree distribution often reduces the average distance between nodes but, paradoxically, may suppress synchronization in networks of oscillators coupled symmetrically with uniform coupling strength. Here we offer a solution to this apparent paradox. Our analysis is partially based ...
